When an teenage makes Real Madrid history in a key Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English champions in the midweek second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.

At 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, every day you go to train and each day you have a game," stated the player after his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added he. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to play for either country at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official senior international match.

He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose Spain, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the two-one win at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the club pursue trophies to come.

Following his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the pitch," he said following the win at Etihad Stadium.
