The Actress Expresses Mentioning Donald Trump Would ‘Worsen the Situation’ That’s Ripping the Nation Apart
The star has revealed that she believes it's no longer appropriate to comment publicly against the Trump government, fearing it could exacerbate unhelpful debate and deepen rifts across the country.
‘I Don’t Really Know If I Should’, Explains Jennifer Lawrence
During a discussion, she commented, “Back in Trump’s initial term, I believed I was acting frantically without clear direction. But it’s become clear, through repeated campaigns, Hollywood stars fail to influence in any way on electoral choices.”
The actor went on, “Why continue? I’m just sharing my opinion on something that’s going to add fuel to a fire dividing the nation apart.”
Shifting Views
The actress has admitted freely about supporting right and leftwing presidential nominees in past elections. Brought up by Republican parents in Kentucky, she supported the Republican nominee in the 2008 election then moving to the left-leaning politics and stating she recognized during the Obama era that backing conservatives was voting against her personal freedoms as a female citizen.
Previous Comments
In 2015, she commented that a Trump victory might signal “a disaster” and publicly supported Joe Biden in the 2020 election. During the most recent election, she voiced her backing to Vice President Harris, “as I think she’s a strong contender and I am confident that she will make every effort to protect women’s health rights.”
Hollywood’s Stance
Lawrence was aligned with most of Hollywood in her opposition to Donald Trump as a presidential contender, but the lack of leverage stars have over the voting intentions was underscored by his election win.
“Another four years feels different,” said Lawrence of his administration. “Since he said what he was going to do. We were aware of his actions for his first term. He was very clear. And voters made that decision.”
New Release
The actor is discussing her new film, Lynne Ramsay’s project in which she plays a recent parent who struggles with her psychological well-being in a remote area. During a press conference for the film in the film festival, she addressed Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “I feel fear. It’s devastating. What’s happening is no less than a humanitarian crisis and it’s awful.”
Additional Thoughts
Lawrence added by stating that she was saddened by “the disrespect in the conversations of American politics right now and how that is going to be commonplace to the kids today. It’s going to be typical to them that elected officials deceive.”
The actor sought to redirect outrage about the issue to leaders rather than actors and artists. “Keep attention on those accountable,” she remarked, which was interpreted as a nod to the recent commitment signed by more than 4,000 arts community members to refuse engagement with specific industry bodies.
Personal Connections
Jennifer Lawrence, who received an Academy Award at a young age for her part in her breakout movie, is receiving praise for her portrayal in her latest project. Even though Lynne Ramsay has rejected the plot being interpreted as one of postpartum depression and psychosis, Lawrence said that she did relate to aspects of her film narrative after the birth of her new baby, not long after production wrapped.
“I felt anxiety about my child,” she said, “imagining every negative outcome, and then second-guessing everything that I was attempting. I was seeing a therapist, but I started taking a drug called Zurzuvae and I continued it for 14 days and it really helped.”
Film Challenges
The actor also mentioned regarding the empowering aspect of shooting revealing sequences in the project while she was expecting and unable to exercise.
“It feels nice,” she said, of being forced to abandon insecurities. “I mean, I occasionally wonder where I’m like, What separates me between my work and that profession? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
