Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this week, responding to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded team members for making hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.
What Sparked the Recent Dispute
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered remarks after the Broncos' historic 33-32 victory over the Giants. Payton remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.
Context of the Coach-QB Relationship
- Wilson was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M extension.
- The team went 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year prior to the team hired Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
- Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.
If Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37M pay for 2025 would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious split between the quarterback and his coach.
